During our one week stay in Maui, we stayed at a condo in Maalaea so we could cook some meals and enjoy meals out too. We have the best Maui Food + Drink Guide for a week stay in Maui. This worked out great for our family because we had an awesome mix of enjoying lots of restaurants, and were able to chill out at the condo to cook up a quick meal. I've broken it down into must buys from the grocery store or Costco, our favorite restaurants and some don't miss desserts!
What Food + Drinks to Buy at the Grocery Store or Costco in Maui?
When we arrived in Maui, we headed straight to Costco after picking up our rental car at the airport. I did a bunch of research on where to shop before arriving and found that Costco would have most everything we wanted for decent pricing. We ended up picking up a few miscellaneous items up at Safeway later in the week.
Our best purchases from Costco in Maui were: Viva La Familia Mild Salsa, croissants, Portuguese sausage, eggs, cheddar cheese, milk, mashed potatoes, cooked meatballs, bagged salad, a lasagna, apples, frozen mango, hard seltzer, a cooked pizza, macadamia popcorn crunch, macadamia nuts and leis.
The leis were 2 for $12 so a must buy from Costco if you're looking for a beautiful welcome.
Our Costco purchases allowed us to enjoy most of our breakfasts and dinners at the condo. We ate 1 dinner out and most of our lunches out at restaurants. This worked really well for us so we didn't have to rush out in the morning. It was nice to do dinner at the condo too so the kids could swim in the pool at the end of the day and we could chill at the beach at our condo in the evenings.
Our best picks from the grocery store were Maui Brewing Beer & POG Seltzer, POG juice, coffee, creamer, paper plates, a box of cereal, a pineapple, chocolate covered macadamia nuts and shortbread cookies for our evening dessert. Pro tip: Pour some POG juice into the POG seltzer for a super tasty Hawaiian cocktail! We picked up a little bit of produce on our Maui Tropical Plantation Tour too. Almost all of the grocery stores have awesome deals on poke. We picked some up from the market in Napili and took it to the beach for lunch one day.
Must Try Food + Drinks at Restaurants in Maui
My favorite drink from our vacation in Maui was the POG Foam Mai Tai from Down the Hatch. I love the glass and the drink was delicious! We had an awesome lunch at Down the Hatch. I recommend trying anything with the Lava Lava shrimp. The kids meals are awesome plus they come with a free dole whip!
The only place we ended up making a reservation for was Kimo's. It is right on the water in Lahaina. They have amazing views, really good drinks and great options for food. I had a really good Pina Colada with a rum float at Kimo's. They give out carrot muffins before your meal and these are fantastic.
We tried local fish from a few places and my favorite was the Firecracker Fish from Hula Grill in Kaanapali. It was super flavorful and a must try. We loved the banana macadamia nut French toast with Mac nut syrup at Kihei Caffe! Their Mac nut iced coffee was also a must! Our fav Hawaiian spot, Aloha Mixed Plate is no longer in Maui but we found Waikapu on 30 to be the closest for homemade Hawaiian food.
The best thing I ate while in Maui was this TNT Roll from Miso Phat in Kihei. The poke on top is freshly caught and is melt in your mouth delicious. If you're staying in Maalaea, check out the Maalaea General Store. It is more of a restaurant with a few items in their store. We had a tasty breakfast one morning and they have a decent bar. The chicken tenders kids meal with pineapple was from Hula Grill and the kiddos loved it.
Must Try Desserts in Maui
My all time favorite dessert in Maui is the Shave Ice. We enjoyed a really tasty Hawaiian flavored shave ice from Ululanis. We went to the Paia location during our Halfway Road to Hana trip. They have locations all over maui. I love that they put a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream on the bottom topped with Shave Ice of any flavor you choose. We tried Pono Pies for the first time. These pies are made from a Hawaiian breadfruit grown in Hana, macadamia nuts and honey. We loved the mango flavor. I'm a big fan of the banana bread in Maui. Our fav this time was from Aunty Sandy's. Lastly, we enjoyed the ever famous Dole Whip while we were at the Maui Ocean Center.
