We just got back from a one week stay in Maui, Hawaii! Staying in Maalaea, Maui is an amazing location for families traveling with kids. We stayed in a beautiful condo right on the ocean, only 15 steps to the sand! Staying in Maalaea was ideal for our family on this vacation because it is located right in central Maui but still on the coast. Maalaea is only about 10 minutes from the airport and it makes for a great spot to be able to check out multiple areas of Maui. We loved our stay in Maalaea and have all the details about this area below!
Daily Morning Beach Walks in Maalaea
My favorite part about staying in Maalaea, aside from the awesome location, is taking a daily beach walk every morning. I've been incorporating long walks into my daily life at home and I couldn't wait to be able to do my daily walk on the sand every day. It was the best! Maalaea connects to Haycraft Beach and then to Sugar Beach so there is a long stretch of open sand available for long walks. I would walk at least 5,000 steps every morning before heading off for our daily adventure. These beaches have a lot of reef and rock areas for the kids to explore along the way.
Condo at Hono Kai, Maalaea
We stayed at Hono Kai A3 through My Perfect Stays in Maalaea. I love that this condo is on the bottom floor, right by the pool and the ocean. It was so nice to have this location with two young kids. We had a great patio with a grassy area in front and a few steps over to the ocean. Out our front door was access to the pool. We really enjoyed our stay at Hono Kai and would stay there again and again.
We also had a great experience with My Perfect Stays, the rental company. My Perfect Stays uses a lockbox on the condo door to check in and sends text messages and emails to communicate all necessities for the trip. We loved having a condo so we could cook most of our meals. We also enjoyed meals out but this made it easier while traveling with the kiddos to be able to cook breakfasts and dinners.
What to Do in Maalaea
There are a few awesome activities right in the small town of Maalaea or very close by including the Maui Ocean Center, Maui Golf & Sports Park, the Maalaea Harbor, Ma'alaea General Store & Restaurant, Maui Zipline, Maui Tropical Plantation Tour and snorkeling. We set up our days with a morning walk, an adventure for the day and a return to the condo to go swimming. Our first few days, we did the activities in Maalaea or close by since we knew there would be a little jet lag. Later in our trip we did a couple dinners out and explored areas like Kihei, Paia, Kaanapali and Lahaina. The kids loved coming back to the condo every evening to swim in the pool and play in the ocean.
Sunrises in Maalaea
My last favorite thing about staying in Maalaea were the beautiful sunrises! I am typically a sunset girl but the view for sunsets is not very good in this area. The sunrises were so beautiful though and I got to enjoy these everyday with my morning walk.
