November is here and I'm ready to bring you my fav side dishes! Brussel Sprouts, Balsamic Bacon are the key side dish to any tasty meal. These are so absolutely delicious. The bacon and onion are cooked down to get all the flavors of caramelization, then they are combined into the Brussel sprouts. Next, add in a balsamic glaze then bake till crispy. This is a classic side dish for Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. It's a simple recipe, I know you can do, so let's get cooking!
Why Make Balsamic Bacon Brussel Sprouts?
Brussel Sprouts are very high in antioxidants and vitamin C! This was my least favorite veggie growing up but I only had it served as a boiled Brussel sprout. I found over the years that I actually do love Brussel sprouts as long as they are cooked well and more on the crispy side! Adding flavors like balsamic, bacon and onion is the way to go!
What ingredients are used?
- Baby Brussel Sprouts - These can be found in a bag in the produce department or fresh October through March
- Onion - I use white or yellow onion
- Cooked Bacon - Cook bacon or use a precooked bacon for this recipe
- Olive Oil - I prefer olive oil in this recipe but avocado oil would also work well
- Bourbon Maple Syrup - A rich bourbon maple syrup is ideal. You can substitute a quality maple syrup.
- Balsamic Vinegar - Balsamic vinegar gives it a punch of flavor needed
How to Make Brussel Sprouts with Balsamic and Bacon
One trick I learned recently is to cook down the onion and bacon in a skillet prior to baking the dish. This brings in a lot more flavor. Simply sauté with a little olive oil and cook down for about 10 minutes. Use precooked bacon for an even easier dish.
Once the bacon and onion are cooked down, you can add it to the Brussel sprouts and give it a good stir.
Next, make the balsamic glaze. I combined a tablespoon of bourbon maple syrup with 1.5 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Pour this over the mixture and combine. You can also make a balsamic glaze just by cooking down the balsamic vinegar on its own. Bring to a boil then simmer for 5 minutes or until thickened. Then bake the Brussel sprouts until the edges are crispy or even longer if you prefer. Grab the full recipe below!
