We recently had a weekend stay on Shelter Island and had an awesome adults only trip! We had planned on going to Cabo for our friends 40th birthday but our flights were cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. We decided that we really should do something since we already had babysitters ready to go. Since it was a Friday morning on Labor Day weekend, a lot of places were sold out or pretty pricey. We found a room at Kona Kai and decided to share a room to keep costs down. We ended up having a great trip and I wanted to share a few quick tips for a fab weekend on Shelter Island.
Where to Stay on Shelter Island
We stayed at the beautiful Kona Kai Resort. I had never stayed before but had heard many good things. It is located right on the beach with a marina full of docked boats. The bay is located on the opposite side of the resort. We could see water from both sides and it was a beautiful view to wake up to. The resort decor is filled with bright teal and pops of yellow with a relaxed island vibe. Kona Kai has an awesome pool, a full spa, restaurants and plenty of entertainment.
Where to Eat on Shelter Island
We stopped in for coffee at Better Buzz and tried some tasty different drinks like the mocha de mexico and the honey latte. Their breakfast looked great too. Kona Kai also has tasty looking eats with bottomless mimosas or bloody mary's on the weekends. Our favorite spot for food was Point Loma Seafood. We had ceviche, a crab sandwich and clam chowder. Everything was fresh and super tasty! We also had a good time at Harbor Town Pub. They have a great bar atmosphere and a row of pin ball machines in the back.
What to do on Shelter Island
When we first arrived to Kona Kai during the day on Friday it seemed pretty mellow. They even had a quiet movie night for the kids at the pool. Friday evening we went out for dinner then walked down the pier and watched the fisherman. We enjoyed the hot tub that night and went to bed early. Saturday was a whole different vibe. There were still kids around enjoying the pool but they also had a DJ and the pool filled up. We spent most of the day lounging at the pool then we went out for dinner and drinks at the pub. Kona Kai also has bikes for guests to ride around but we missed that for this trip. We really enjoyed a weekend just for the adults to reconnect with each other and spend time with our friends.
