If you love bourbon, you're going to love this Smoked Old Fashioned. I'm excited to bring you this delicious Smokin' Steve Old Fashioned from Steve Haddadin. Steve came up with the idea to add dry ice in place of regular ice in an Old Fashioned drink during his law school days in Columbus, Ohio. Many of our readers here love our Bourbon Holiday Cocktail, so I know you'll love this cocktail too!
Why Make a Smoked Old Fashioned?
A classic old fashioned is made by muddling sugar with bitters, adding whiskey or bourbon, and garnishing with orange and a cherry. Old fashioned drinks are very decadent and delicious. Adding a spark of fun with the dry ice just brings so many levels of excitement to a celebration. Make sure to handle the dry ice with precaution and do not drink the dry ice.
Ingredients Needed
- Bourbon - bourbon, rye or whiskey, depending on your preference
- Simple syrup - or 1 muddled sugar cube
- Bitters - is a mixture of botanicals, roots, and spices steeped in an alcohol base. If you don't have any you could substitute vanilla extract or Campari.
- Oranges - Use the peel for garnish
- cherries - Use maraschino cherries like luxardo
- Dry Ice - The dry ice creates the smoking effect. If you want an Old Fashioned without the Smoke, omit the dry ice.
How to Make a Smokin' Steve Old Fashioned
First, we will mix all of the ingredients together. You can do this in a glass or a shaker glass. I added a shot of the bourbon to a shaker glass. Next, add the simple syrup and bitters. Shake or stir to combine. Let this sit while you peel off a piece from the orange for the garnish.
Add the orange peel and 1-2 cherries to the glass. Add a small piece of dry ice to the center of the glass with tongs or gloves. Then pour your bourbon mixture on top and be ready for the show. The dry ice will start to smoke and you'll have a Smoked Old Fashioned!
Enjoying Your Drink
A quick note about dry ice - you don't want to drink it or touch the dry ice with your hands. It can burn you since it is not like regular ice. You can watch the fun show of the smoke, snap some photos and let the dry ice evaporate before consuming the drink.
