We ate at El Sueno in Old Town, San Diego for Mark's birthday and it is now one of my favorite restaurants! The food, decor and location are an awesome combo for a fun meal out. The dishes are a vibrant and modern take on traditional recipes. I'm still thinking about the enchiladas suizas!
The Drinks
El Sueno has some of the best margaritas in town! The Que Rico is made with blanco tequila, mango, chamoy and bitters. They have a full menu of flavorful margaritas, beer, wine, specialty cocktails and festive shots.
The Chips and Salsa
This is one of those restaurants where I could just sit and enjoy drinks with the chips and salsa. They brought out 4 salsas and asked if we wanted to try them all or just go for mild or hot. We of course, tried them all! Their chips are deliciously crisp and all of the salsas had a unique flavor. The mild green salsa is my fav, but I also love the spark of the red pepper salsa.
The Appetizers
For the appetizers, we enjoyed the rolled tacos which are perfect for sharing. They are topped with all the fixings including my fav, pickled onions. The tostada bites are served with shrimp. If you're looking to try a few items, check out their happy hour menu. The serve up their street tacos, sopes, guacamole and elote!
The Main Dishes
The star dish of our meal was the enchiladas suizas! The dish is stuffed with marinated chicken, queso Oaxaca, salsa verde, lettuce and cotija. Our server explained how this dish came from the owners mother's famous recipe. It's a delicious meal served along side rice and beans.
A close tie for our favorite dish of the day was the queso birria tacos! All of the dishes are so tasty!
The tacos are served with the birria consome (sauce) to pour onto each taco for added flavor. Additionally, the tacos are so good with the melted cheese and sauce for dipping.
The Vibe
I really enjoyed the decor at El Sueno. It's very modern with fun pops of color. There's a wall with loteria graphics. I love the aqua door at the entrance. The vibe is very chill, fun and welcoming. The restaurant is located in Old Town which often has very authentic Mexican culture. I love that this restaurant brings in a more modern spin on the traditional aspects of the culture. It's new, fun and delicious!
