The Italian restaurant, Trattoria Don Pietro is located in Old Town San Diego amidst a gathering of multiple Mexican restaurants. Don Pietro is sure to stand out with its Sicilian fare. In addition to the authentic Italian cuisine, their craft cocktails and vibrant floral decor is enough to bring anyone in for a taste!
How Don Pietro Started
During the shutdown in 2020, brothers Pietro and Joseph Busalacchi took a leap of faith to open the al-fresco style Italian dining experience in the heart of San Diego’s cultural district, Old Town. The Busalacchi family has many amazing restaurants in San Diego, including Barbusa in Little Italy. Pietro brings experience from TomTom, West Hollywood's popular bar headed by the Vanderpump family.
The Drink Menu
Let's start with the drink menu since it is just as large as the dinner menu! Don Pietro offers specialty and seasonal cocktails, as well as shots and even a crystal sangria pitcher. I tried a mocktail version of their Firewater, made with El Jimador Reposado, Pimm's Liquor, Prickly Pear Puree, Blood Orange, Lime, Simple Syrup, Firewater Bitters, Tajin Rim and a Fire Stick. It was stunning and refreshing. They also serve beer and wine.
The Antipasti Dishes
From Tequila Tiger Shrimp to Eggplant and Tomato Bruschetta, there's something unique for everyone to try. We really enjoyed the Prosciutto and Burrata served on top of arugula with a balsamic reduction. The also offer a fried burrata, Sicilian meatballs, calamari and arancini. Salads include a caesar, antipasto, wedge, caprese and Brussels sprouts.
The Entrees at Don Pietro
The pasta dishes include gemelli, rigatoni, penne, tortellini, ravioli, spaghetti and orcchiette. I enjoyed the Truffle-Infused Gnocchi with house made sausage, mushroom and bourbon cream. In addition to the pasta options, there's a chef's daily cut of fish or land. There are 4 pizza options that all looked fantastic as well.
We also enjoyed the lobster spaghetti. It was very light and flavorful.
I hope you get a chance to dine at Don Pietro in Old Town, San Diego. The Sicilian menu, craft cocktails and vibrant floral decor are a real treat. Check out their sister restaurant, El Sueno! Enjoy! xo, Bri
