Chef James was so excited to make an apple pie with me. He peeled the apples with such focus and asked questions along the way. He loves to cook and it's so fun to see him do something he loves.
How to Make an Apple Crumb Pie?
There are a few steps for this recipe. I used a frozen pie crust for the bottom but you can make a crust or use pie sheets. Whatever you choose, just make sure it is defrosted when it's time to bake. First, make sure all of your apples are peeled and sliced thin, then placed in a large bowl.
Next, make the pie filling on the stove. Melt the butter and add the remaining filling ingredients: flour, sugars, water, cinnamon and lemon. You'll simmer that for about 3-5 minutes. Then pour the filling over all of the apples and stir to combine.
Then pour into your pie crust and make the crumb topping.
Add all crumb topping ingredients to a bowl and combine with a fork until blended. I melted the butter just a bit to combine easily. Then pour onto the apple pie and press down a bit to create a pie top. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the foil and cook another 20-30 minutes. While the pie is cooking, you can make the caramel sauce.
