We just celebrated 14 years and was reminded of our 10 year anniversary staycation on Shelter Island in San Diego, CA! We stayed at one of our favorite spots, Kona Kai Resort & Spa. There are some big bonuses for doing a staycation in your own city. The top reasons are that you don't have to travel long, you can get the fun started right away, and it's close to home if you need to head back for any reason. While, I don't always recommend a staycation for every adventure, it sure has its place for certain occasions. I wanted to stay in a nice place for our anniversary, with a great pool and new (to us) spots to try out in our own city. We headed straight to the pool once we arrived and checked into the room.
Relaxing at Kona Kai Resort & Spa
The first day was a bit chilly, reminding us why we love the everyday warmth of Cabo. But, we found a wind break spot and still enjoyed some sun while it was out on the first day. The weather was amazing on the second day so we grabbed a few lounge chairs and I proceeded to get a lovely sunburn. We had another awesome stay at Kona Kai with our friends before this trip (read more about it here).
The rooms at Kona Kai are so pretty. I just love the color scheme and the comfort.
Dinner at Vessel Restaurant at Kona Kai
We enjoyed a super tasty dinner at Vessel Restaurant, right at Kona Kai. Our absolute favorite dish of the night was the Reuben Slider served on a pretzel bun with house made pickles. We also really enjoyed the mussels and the short rib dinner. They also serve clam chowder, ahi tacos, salmon, burgers, sea bass and chicken. This makes for a great date night spot as it overlooks the marina.
Exploring Shelter Island and Nearby Neighborhoods
Shelter Island is a very small neighborhood of Point Loma separated as a narrow strip of land. The first morning we drove about a mile, over to Coffee Hub for coffee and breakfast. I really fell in love with this spot. It's a simple little coffee shop with a very inviting feel. I loved the low vibe music, the delicious caramel lattes and the tasty food options. Another great spot for food is Point Loma Seafood. We had ceviche, a crab sandwich and clam chowder. Everything was fresh and super tasty! We had a fun time at Harbor Town Pub. We also drove over to Ocean Beach (OB) to check out the shops and had lunch at OB Noodle House.
The last morning, we went to Coffee Hub again and talked about our future plans. It is so nice to get some time together by ourselves. Friends! Plan date days, trips, staycations or any other kind of adventure so you can spend more quality time together. It is so necessary! Happy 10 years to my love! (now 14!) xo - Bri
